Néa Ródha village in Chalkidiki

In the beginning of September we decided to visit this cute little village situated in Chalkidiki. It was a long drive (around 11 hours) and the weather was nice till we arrived in Greece. At some point we had to stop and wait till rain stops because it was impossible to drive. Anyways , in late hours , somewhere around 11pm we finally arrived. I was so exhausted but also so excited to explore this place. 

About & history 

Néa Ródha is a peaceful village, built at the narrowest point of the Athos penisula, where Xerxes, king of Persia (480 BC) opened a canal for his fleet to pass through. Walking through the village you will see a lot of nice houses with beautiful gardens, a lot of fish taverns and there is also a great bakery. 

Néa Ródha is named after the original village called Roda. Rodi , meaning pomegranate , is the root of the word Roda which means "many pomegranates" . And Nea meaning new is the meaning of the first word. This due to an abundance pomegranate trees in the original village. This can be seen even today in the new village, where many people still have pomegranate trees in their backyard. Fishing, tourism and agriculture are the people’s main occupations.

Beach, water & weather  

Néa Ródha has clear water, beautiful sea and a gorgeous wide sandy beach with a blue flag. We stayed there for 15 days. Fist 7 days were rainy ( it was in the beginning of September ) with a lot of wind and  water was cold. But we took that time to explore the penisula. The other 7 days , the weather was perfect. It was a bit of wind but water was warm and crystal clear. 

Nearby is one beach , called Voulitsa with a nice bar and music is great. 

Food and drink

Ofc we had to try Gyros ( dish made from meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie ). I adore it and it is simply amazing!! Tzatziki & moussaka , how can I skip that :) There is one bakery which had amazing sweets and mini icecreams. Also pastry is great. 

Ouranopolis

We spent one day in town of Ouranopolis,  which is situated on the coastline in the northwest part (the very beginning) of the Athos peninsula, part of the bigger Chalkidiki peninsula. It is the last settlement before the border with the monastic state of Mount Athos (the Holy Mountain). 
It is a very lovely and small village , full of tourists , souvenirs on every corners, restaurants.
